You may never know the impact you've had on someone.

I've been fortunate throughout my life and career to cross paths with people who made a difference in who I am today.

Some were leaders. Some were mentors. Some were coworkers, friends, or people I only knew for a short time.

And the interesting thing is, I'm not sure many of them ever realized the impact they had.

Sometimes it wasn't some profound piece of advice.

It was someone taking the time to listen.

Someone believing in me when I wasn't completely confident in myself.

Someone holding me accountable when I needed it.

Or someone simply setting an example worth following.

As I've gotten older, I've started thinking more about the other side of that equation.

What kind of impact am I having on the people around me?

Because whether we realize it or not, people are watching.

Our kids watch how we handle adversity.

Our coworkers notice how we treat others.

The people we mentor remember whether we encouraged them or discouraged them.

And sometimes a conversation that seems insignificant to us can mean everything to someone else.

We don't always get to see the results of the seeds we plant.

But that doesn't mean they aren't growing.

Leadership isn't always about the big decisions or the recognition that comes with them.

Sometimes it's simply about leaving someone a little better than you found them.

And if we're fortunate, maybe one day they'll do the same for someone else.
