My Story
Leadership has been part of my life for a long time; but I learned early that leadership and having a title are two very different things.
My foundation was built in the United States Marine Corps. That experience taught me lessons about accountability, preparation, teamwork, discipline, and taking care of the people beside you. But one lesson has stayed with me more than any other:
People matter.
After leaving the Marine Corps, I began a career in the energy industry. What started in field operations grew into more than two decades of experience spanning operational leadership, offshore and deepwater operations, account management, technical sales, and business development.
I've worked alongside people in the field solving problems when things weren't going according to plan. I've led teams where communication and execution mattered. I've sat across the table from customers trying to understand challenges that didn't always have simple answers. And I've had the opportunity to mentor people as they worked toward becoming better at what they do.
Those experiences taught me something I probably didn't fully understand when I was younger:
The best leaders don't need to have all the answers.
They need to listen.
They need to understand the people around them.
They need to be willing to make difficult decisions, own their mistakes, share the credit, and follow through when they give someone their word.
That's where Lead | Listen | Deliver comes from.
LEAD
Leadership isn't about being the loudest person in the room or having the biggest title. It's about setting the example, taking responsibility, developing people, and being willing to step forward when something needs to be done.
LISTEN
Before you can lead people—or solve a customer's problem—you have to understand them.
Some of the most valuable things I've learned in my career happened when I stopped thinking about what I was going to say next and simply listened.
Listening builds understanding.
Understanding builds trust.
And trust changes everything.
DELIVER
Your word has to mean something.
If you tell someone you're going to do something, do everything you can to make it happen. When things don't go according to plan, communicate. Take ownership. Find another way forward.
People may not remember every conversation you have with them, but they remember whether they could count on you.
MORE THAN A CAREER
My career is an important part of my story, but it isn't the whole story.
I'm a father, a United States Marine Corps veteran, a mentor, and someone who believes strongly in giving back—particularly to the veteran community and to people who may simply need someone in their corner.
Some of the most meaningful experiences in my life haven't happened in an office, on a rig, or during a business meeting. They've happened while helping someone recognize something in themselves that they didn't see before.
That's one reason I created LeadListenDeliver.com.
I'm not here because I believe I've figured everything out.
I haven't.
I'm still learning. I'm still growing. I'm still making mistakes. And I'm still finding lessons in unexpected places.
This is simply a place to share some of those lessons—the ones I've learned through leadership, business, service, relationships, successes, failures, and life.
If something I've learned along the way helps someone else become a better leader, mentor, teammate, parent, friend, or person, then this site is doing exactly what I hoped it would do.
Lead with purpose.
Listen with intention.
Deliver on your word.
THE LEAD | LISTEN | DELIVER PHILOSOPHY
I believe leadership is built through relationships, strengthened through trust, and proven through action.
Lead by setting the example and helping others become stronger.
Listen to understand before trying to be understood.
Deliver by doing what you say you're going to do.
Titles change. Careers change. Circumstances change. But the principles of good leadership don't.
Take care of people. Earn their trust. Keep your word. And never stop learning.
